# Checking your setup

> Run two free checks on your own domain to find out which email security records your shop has.

Do these two checks before you contact anyone, so you know what to ask for. Both are free and need no software.

You need two things: your domain name, and any Gmail address.

Your domain name is the part of your shop email after the `@`. In `service@example.com`, the domain is `example.com`.

<Note>
  **Educational guidance.** Email security is not part of the TireTutor product, and TireTutor does not manage your mailboxes. These pages explain how it works so you can brief the right person.
</Note>

## Check 1, read the grade on a message you send

Gmail grades every message it receives. Send yourself one. Read the grade.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open your shop email">
    Use the account that ends in your own domain.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Send a short message to any Gmail address">
    A personal Gmail account works. Put anything in the subject.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open that message in Gmail" />

  <Step title="Select More beside Reply">
    **More** is the three-dot menu at the top right of the message.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose Show original">
    A new tab opens with the message details.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the SPF, DKIM, and DMARC results">
    They sit near the top, above the message text.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Search the page for spf, dkim, and dmarc">
    The header is long. Press Cmd+F, or Ctrl+F on Windows.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Check>
  Each of the three shows a result. The word you want is `pass`.
</Check>

A domain with all three records working holds header text like this:

```text theme={null}
spf=pass spfdomain=example.com dkim=pass
dkdomain=example.com dmarc=pass fromdomain=example.com
```

### What your result means

| What you see | What it means | What to do |
| - | - | - |
| All three say `pass` | Your records work | Check again once a year |
| A result is not `pass` | That record is wrong | [Get the records set up](/dealers/email-security/managing-email-security) |
| A result is missing | That record does not exist | [Get the records set up](/dealers/email-security/managing-email-security) |

<Note>
  A missing line is the most common result for a shop. It means nobody ever set that record up. Nothing warns you.
</Note>

## Check 2, look up the records themselves

Check 1 grades one message. Check 2 reads the records, so you can see exactly which one is absent.

Google runs a free checker. It needs no account.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Google Admin Toolbox Check MX">
    Go to [toolbox.googleapps.com/apps/checkmx](https://toolbox.googleapps.com/apps/checkmx/).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Type your domain into Domain name" />

  <Step title="Type your selector into DKIM selector (optional)">
    Take the selector for your email provider from the table below.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select Run checks" />
</Steps>

| Your email provider | DKIM selector |
| - | - |
| Google Workspace, or Gmail for business | `google` |
| Microsoft 365, or Outlook for business | `selector1` |

<Tip>
  Unsure which provider runs your mail? The check reports your mail servers. Names ending in `google.com` mean Google Workspace. Names ending in `outlook.com` mean Microsoft 365.
</Tip>

## Write down three answers

Take these three answers to whoever manages your domain. They cannot start without them.

| Question | Where you found it |
| - | - |
| Which provider runs our mail? | Check 2, in the mail server names |
| Which of the three records are missing? | Check 1, or Check 2 |
| Who can edit our DNS records? | Nobody at the shop usually knows |

The third answer is the one shops rarely have. The setup page explains how to find it.
