# Viewing gross profit

> See what an estimate or work order makes, find the group that is short of its margin goal, and hide the figures from a customer.

The **Gross Profit** card sits on every estimate and work order, below **Inventory Shortcuts**. It shows what the order makes before tax.

<video controls title="Reading what a work order makes in the Profit Analyzer" className="w-full aspect-video rounded-xl" src="https://media.tiretutor.ai/public/pos/gross-profit-walkthrough-narrated-desktop.4ee8bc3804.mp4">

</video>

## Before you start

Everyone who can open the order sees the card. That includes service writers with a **User** permission.

The card appears once the order carries a tire, part, labor, or fee line.

## Margin goals

Each group on the order has a margin goal:

| Group | Margin goal |
| - | - |
| Tires | 25% |
| Parts | 45% |
| Labor | 70% |

These goals are TireTutor defaults. Your shop cannot change them.

Fees have no goal of their own. The profit that fees make still counts toward the order's gross profit and margin.

## Read the card

<Frame caption="The Gross Profit card on an order where every line has a cost. The order is close to its 37% goal, and $28.00 more reaches it.">
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/tiretutor/pWiLkCMP8Z0NDQMc/images/pos/gross-profit-readout-desktop.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=pWiLkCMP8Z0NDQMc&q=85&s=2e6838acf04c563ebfbfc1da30a93a81" alt="The Gross Profit card. Gross Profit reads $320.00 on the left and Gross Margin reads 35% on the right, both in amber. An amber bar below them is almost full. Under the bar, the label reads Close to goal, and Order goal 37% sits on the right. The line below reads $28.00 more gets the order to its goal." width="1056" height="448" data-path="images/pos/gross-profit-readout-desktop.png" />
</Frame>

The card shows these things:

* **Gross Profit**, in dollars
* **Gross Margin**, as a percentage of the sell price
* A bar that fills as the margin moves toward the order goal
* A label with the result
* **Order goal**, as a percentage

The order goal blends the goals of the tires, parts, and labor on the order. A group counts more when it sells for more on the order. Fees do not change the order goal. For example, an order with \$600 of tires and \$200 of labor has a 36% order goal. Its shop fees do not change that goal.

The gross profit and the gross margin include the fees. A fee usually costs the shop nothing, so it raises the order's margin toward the goal.

The label under the bar gives the result:

| Label | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Meets goal** | The margin is at the order goal or above it. |
| **Close to goal** | The margin is up to 5 points below the order goal. |
| **Below goal** | The margin is more than 5 points below the order goal. |
| **Cost missing** | One or more lines have no cost, so the margin reads higher than it is. |
| **No margin** | No line on the order has a cost. |

When the order is short of its goal, the card says how many dollars more it needs. For example: **\$28.00 more gets the order to its goal.** That is the amount to add to the order's price so that the whole order reaches its goal.

The label looks at the whole order. A group above its goal, or the profit from fees, can make up for a group that is short. So an order can be **Close to goal** or **Meets goal** while one group is still short. In the example above, tires and parts are above their goals, but labor is short. Open the breakdown to see which group is short and how much it needs.

## When a cost is missing

TireTutor never counts a line with no cost as free. A line with no cost makes the margin read higher than it is.

When some lines have no cost, the card turns gray. It names each group that has a line with no cost.

<Frame caption="Labor has no cost yet, so the card turns gray and says so.">
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/tiretutor/pWiLkCMP8Z0NDQMc/images/pos/gross-profit-readout-cost-missing-desktop.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=pWiLkCMP8Z0NDQMc&q=85&s=09ed5660d661e4bfa50dbf53b6738733" alt="The Gross Profit card in gray. Gross Profit reads $455.00 and Gross Margin reads 49%. The bar is gray and empty, and the label under it reads Cost missing, with Order goal 37% on the right. The text below reads Labor isn't fully costed yet, so this reads higher than it is." width="1056" height="448" data-path="images/pos/gross-profit-readout-cost-missing-desktop.png" />
</Frame>

When no line has a cost, the card reads **No margin**. It asks you to add cost to the tires and parts on the order.

The cost reaches the order in these ways:

* **Tires and parts from your inventory.** TireTutor adds the cost when you add the item to the order, or when you swap it in with **Replace Tire/Part**. A line added before the item was in your inventory keeps no cost until you add the item to the order again.
* **Tires with no cost.** The breakdown points you to the **Tire Catalog**. When you order a tire there, **tiretutor.ai turbo actions** writes the purchase order, and the cost comes with it.
* **Parts from PartsTech.** When you add a part with **Add Parts**, TireTutor saves what PartsTech charges your shop as the line's cost. The price on the line is still the PartsTech price plus your part markup.
* **Parts with no cost.** Add the cost to the part in your inventory, then swap the part into the order with **Replace Tire/Part**.
* **Labor.** You set an hourly cost. See [Set your labor cost](#set-your-labor-cost).

A cost in a different currency from the line's price counts as no cost.

## Open the breakdown

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the details">
    Select the **Open gross profit details** icon at the top right of the card.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the whole order">
    Read **Whole order** at the top. It shows the gross profit, the gross margin, and the order goal.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read each group">
    Read **Tires**, **Parts**, **Labor**, and **Fees**. Only the groups on the order show.
  </Step>

  <Step title="See a group's line items">
    Select the group's name, or the arrow beside it. The line items open directly below the name.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Close the line items">
    Select the group's name again.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The breakdown is the **tiretutor.ai Profit Analyzer** panel. It opens in the page, below the card. It is not a dialog, so the order stays in view.

<Frame caption="The Profit Analyzer with the Tires line items open, the labor cost slider, and the fees on the order.">
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/tiretutor/pWiLkCMP8Z0NDQMc/images/pos/gross-profit-breakdown-desktop.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=pWiLkCMP8Z0NDQMc&q=85&s=26ab7ec2d86aeb644a1643a03b08621e" alt="The Gross Profit card above the tiretutor.ai Profit Analyzer panel. The Whole order box shows Gross Profit $320.00, Gross Margin 35%, and Order Goal 37%, with $28.00 more gets the order to its goal. The Tires group is open and lists one tire line with its sell price, cost, and margin. Tires and Parts each read in green that the group is at goal. Labor shows a 25% margin in red, Billed Hours 1.5, Gross Profit per Billed Hour $30.00/hr, the What a tech hour costs you slider at $90.00/hr, and Labor cost: 1.5 hrs × $90.00/hr. A red line under it reads Increase the price of labor by $270 on this work order to hit 70%. Fees shows Charged $20.00, Cost $0.00, and Gross Profit 100% · $20.00, with Fees lift the order's margin from 33% to 35%." width="1056" height="2556" data-path="images/pos/gross-profit-breakdown-desktop.png" />
</Frame>

Tires, parts, and labor each show these figures:

* **Sell Price**
* **Cost**
* **Gross Margin**, as a percentage and in dollars
* **Margin goal**

A group that is short says how many whole dollars to add to its price to reach its goal. For example: **Increase the price of labor by \$270 on this work order to hit 70%.** On an estimate, the text reads **on this estimate**. A group at its goal says so.

If some lines in the group have no cost, the text says so and tells you to ask for more than that figure.

Each line item shows its sell price, its cost, and its margin with the profit in dollars. A labor line that bills by the hour also shows its hours. A line with no cost shows **no cost**. Point to it to see how to add the cost.

**Labor** also shows **Billed Hours** and **Gross Profit per Billed Hour**. The per-hour figure uses the profit on labor only.

**Fees** shows the shop fees and fixed service fees on the order: **Charged**, **Cost**, and **Gross Profit**. Fees have no goal and no result. When the fees raise the order's margin, the group says by how much, for example **Fees lift the order's margin from 33% to 35%.**

The breakdown leaves some things out:

* Taxes
* Warranty
* State tire tax
* Work the customer declined

To close the breakdown, select the **Close gross profit details** icon.

## Set your labor cost

A labor line carries a price but no cost. To see a labor margin, set what one hour of a technician's time costs your shop.

<Frame caption="The labor cost starts at $0, so Labor has no margin and asks for a rate.">
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/tiretutor/pWiLkCMP8Z0NDQMc/images/pos/gross-profit-labor-rate-unset-desktop.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=pWiLkCMP8Z0NDQMc&q=85&s=d8d5407025a5119fee8b14a4021cab29" alt="The Gross Profit card in gray, labeled Cost missing, above the Profit Analyzer. The Whole order box is gray and reads Add the missing cost below to see what this order really makes. Tires and Parts each read in green that the group is at goal. The Labor group shows Cost $0.00 and a dash for Gross Margin. A note reads No cost on labor yet. The slider sits at $0.00/hr, and the caption under it reads Set what an hour of tech time costs you." width="1056" height="2552" data-path="images/pos/gross-profit-labor-rate-unset-desktop.png" />
</Frame>

The rate starts at \$0, which means nobody has set it yet. Labor reads as having no cost until you set a rate.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the breakdown">
    Select the **Open gross profit details** icon on the card.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the labor slider">
    Find **What a tech hour costs you** in the **Labor** group.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the rate">
    Drag the slider to your hourly cost, from \$0 to \$150.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Check>
  The line under the slider shows the labor cost, for example **Labor cost: 1.5 hrs × \$90.00/hr**. Labor now shows a margin.
</Check>

If someone used a rate on this computer before, the slider can start at that rate. The caption then reads **remembered from your last order on this computer**. Check the rate before you rely on the labor margin.

The rate costs labor lines that bill by the hour. A flat-rate labor line bills no hours, so it stays without a cost. For those lines, the breakdown asks you to set the price against the time the job takes.

After you set a rate, the caption under the slider stays empty for this order. On your next order on this computer, the caption reads **remembered from your last order on this computer**.

## Hide the figures from a customer

Hide the card before a customer comes to the counter.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Hide the figures">
    Select the **Hide this from the customer** icon on the card or in the breakdown.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Frame caption="With the figures hidden, only a small link stays in place of the card.">
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/tiretutor/pWiLkCMP8Z0NDQMc/images/pos/gross-profit-hidden-desktop.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=pWiLkCMP8Z0NDQMc&q=85&s=6644d0900af65a2322c1fc295c569ad9" alt="The space where the Gross Profit card was. No figures, bar, or labels show. A single link reads Show gross profit." width="1056" height="136" data-path="images/pos/gross-profit-hidden-desktop.png" />
</Frame>

Every figure clears. Only the **Show gross profit** link stays.

To see the figures again, select **Show gross profit**. The card also shows again when you reload the page.

## When it does not work

**The card does not show.** The order must carry at least one tire, part, labor, or fee line.

**The card is gray.** A group has a line with no cost. Read the text under the bar for the group's name. Then add the cost as [When a cost is missing](#when-a-cost-is-missing) describes.

**Labor stays gray after you set a rate.** The order has a flat-rate labor line. The hourly rate does not cost a flat-rate line.

**The labor rate is at \$0.** The rate starts at \$0 until you set it. Drag the slider to your hourly cost.
