# Managing parts and wheel markups

> Create, edit, and remove cost-based markup tiers for parts and wheels without replacing existing sell prices.

Use this page when you need different margins for inexpensive and costly inventory items. Parts and wheels use separate sets of tiers, and the settings apply to one shop location at a time.

You need **Owner** or **Admin** access for the shop or its dealership.

<Warning>
  A markup applies only when an item has a cost but no sell price. TireTutor keeps an existing sell price.
</Warning>

## Create a markup tier

**When:** A cost range needs its own fixed or percentage markup.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Parts & Wheels Markups">
    In the sidebar, under **Shop Settings**, select **Parts & Wheels Markups**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a markup section">
    Use **Parts Markup** for parts. Use **Wheels Markup** for wheels.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a tier">
    Select **Add Tier** in the correct section. The **Add Markup Tier** dialog opens.

    <Frame caption="A new tier needs a category, a markup, and a cost range.">

    </Frame>
  </Step>

  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the markup">

  <Step title="Lower the percentage where needed">
    Use smaller percentages for costlier items when price competition is stronger.
  </Step>

    Repeat the tiers without overlaps or gaps. A cost that matches no tier gets no automatic markup.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save all changes">

  </Step>
</Steps>

<Check>
  The updated tier appears in its section. Existing sell prices remain unchanged.
</Check>

## Remove a markup tier

**When:** You no longer want to use an existing markup tier.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Find the tier">
    Open **Parts & Wheels Markups**. The tier sits under **Parts Markup** or **Wheels Markup**.

## How a tier sets a sell price

When a new item has cost but no sell price, TireTutor finds the matching tier. A tier matches a cost from its minimum up to, but not including, its maximum. TireTutor adds that tier's fixed or percentage markup to cost.

For example, a $20 part with a 200% markup gets a $40 markup. TireTutor creates a \$60 sell price.

This calculation happens when TireTutor creates the sell price. The markup does not replace a sell price that already exists.
